The Kia Sportage before depression and reality struck and it gained weight.

I miss small, fun, unpretentious small SUVs. The old RAV and CRV and Sportage and Tracker were all just so happy and easy.

Everything today is like they took steroids and live in a permanent rage, but don’t go to the gym much so they’re just kind of bloated.

Because it’s what the 30-somethings and 40-somethings are buying, because they don’t know what they actually want other than “Give Me Big Tall Car”.

I rep that demographic and don’t see any of my peers doing that, but that’s just anecdote. The Sportage seems like it’s either given to the teenager in the house, or it’s a “ retiree special” like most small mainstream crossovers.

My friends are all buying either luxury crossovers or 90% of the time some kind of a three-row whatever (van, Explorer, Tahoe etc). Sometimes both, like an Infiniti QX60. Or for dad, a pickup or Wrangler :)

I thought image consciousness was strong with teens and 20s, I had no idea it would actually get worse over time.

My mom had one of those. The frame rusted through near the rear suspension mounts and it developed a dangerous wobble when going over bumps at speed. Right back to the dealership it went. She replaced it with an Explorer.

90s Kia: never again.

Coincidentally, I took this picture from the Unsolicited Explorer.

There’s likely geographic differences alongside demographic differences. Almost every single person I’ve met above the age of 30 has a crossover, pickup, or pickup-based SUV. (Then again Maine has a rural culture that prefers SUVs and trucks.)

Same in Alabama — even in the bigger cities and affluent areas, it’s still a lot of trucks and large crossovers . We have the space for it, just not my cup of tea from a driving POV. Or trying to fit it in the garage :)

I didn’t realize we had more than one Mainer in our midst!
